The goal is to enhance the campus’s aesthetic appeal by introducing more native plant species that serve as suitable habitats for pollinators. This initiative will provide students with hands-on experience and practical training in gardening.
The SUNY Maritime College community garden was established by student Emi Oshiro. The garden is currently located by the chapel and its not accessible to people with mobility issues. One of the main issues that needs to be addressed is community involvement and the best way to fix this issue is to provide students with an easy tool guide on how to get involved.

During WW2 Milkweed was used to stuff over 2 million life vest! Milkweed was used as a painkiller, a pulmonary aid, and to treat diarrhea. In addition, fibers from the stems were utilized to make belts and the roots were ingested to treat rheumatism and pleurisy.
The dryness of this plant species makes it significantly flammable. After fire, broom sedge has the ability to quickly regenerate from its root system Andropogon comes from the Greek word Andros, which equals the word, man, and Pogon equals the word, beard. This is derived from the assumption that the hairy spikelet's characteristic of the genus are said to look very similar to that of a man's beard.
Heliopsis from the Greek word Helios for "sun" and Opsis for "appearance." Helianthoides also from the Greek meaning "like Helianthus," the sunflower. Smooth oxeye is considered one of the best hardy plants for a wildflower garden border. It performs well in dry (xeric) locations, in poor to average soils, and in full sun to partial shade.
